This is what my Syeikh; Syeikh Yusuf Hasani has advised us. What he said is what Ibn ‘Athaillah repeatedly said in his prestigious masterpiece “Hikam Ibn ‘Athaillah”.

Ask what Allah want for us not what we want because we may want something good but that might mingled with carnal and personal desires (nafs) and that nafs may lead us to despairs. We didn’t know what will happen with us in the futures so ask what Allah want for us not what we want. Because Allah knows what is the best for us! Put aside what we want and ask Allah for the thing that will make Allah please for us whether we like or dislike so that when we put our personal desires and want only Allah’s pleasure and love only that we can feel contend.
